It's monday.... Ugh mondays!!! I'm a procrastinator sometimes and this afternoon I spent a ton of time researching for this dang paper about technology. I watched this video here and it was crazy! It made me think about how technology is sucking away our free time and changing the way we live, so this week I decided to rant about that.
First things first... I'm starting to research and I run across an article about some social networking site called foursquare.com. THIS SITE is CRAZY!!!! So you don't like link stuff or text in or anything... No. When you walk into certain party places like a bar (never) or a cool bakery or something and you go to the cashier lady or whatever and then she scans your phone and it updates where you are online so every one who follows you can see it.... creepy right? then on top of that the person who frequents an area the most gets named "mayor" of that place. People actually compete for this stuff! I'm thinking this is sorta good since it keeps people out and about instead of holed up in their apartments writing blogs or sitting in front of the TV like I do somedays, but the exposure of where I am at any given point just weirds me out! I mean, you know me- I am the girl who deletes facebook friends once a week out of paranoia- this foursquare business is just too insane! There was a quote by some girl who said "I don't even text or call my friends anymore. It's just so much easier to foursquare them and meet them wherever they are!" CREEPY! I just can't even handle this technological age!
Next thing.... not really going to kill us, but I hate poor cell phone etiquette! There are certain things that I don't do with my phone, and if I ruled the world people would be shot for bad cell phone manners. I'm not going to go into too many details about each one, so here is a list for ya:
1. Don't text people in the same room...yeah... just don't.
2. Don't text and talk at the same time.... includes while on the phone. EW! I hate this! Way to make someone feel worthless... you cannot pay attention to 2 conversations at the same time- I don't care who you are!
3. Don't text and drive... safety, people! safety!
4. Don't answer the phone in the middle of a conversation or whatever unless it's a real emergency.
5. Don't text during movies! I don't care if it's at the movie theater or in someone's living room, don't!
That's a pretty good list :) I have been in situations where people don't treat me very well because they are consumed by their phones and I just don't like to put up with it. Not only that, but what about the quality of face-to face conversations? People seem to be losing some of their real social skills because of the dang internet and texting and chat and nonsense. I challenge you to go without texting or without the internet for a day and see how your stress level decreases. Nobody really needs to get a hold of you 24-7.
Technology is a great thing, but sometimes it just goes to far! I like my facebook, I like my phone, but where will the line stop? Today all I'm concerned with is being me and not being totally absorbed in the "cyber realm." The bad things about the internet and the technology today don't outweigh the good, but there is a lot of scary stuff going on these days.... and technology is a contributing factor. That's what I have to say about that :)

Here is this video, I hope you enjoy it! It's actually about technology being good, but I just have lots of concerns with the "Cyborg nature" of our society.... what will this mean in the grand scheme with evolution and everything? Are machines just tools? Something to think about :)
